REIKI TREATMENTS

For Pets and the People Who Love Them

What is Reiki?

The Reiki (pronounced "ray kee") system of natural healing was founded by Dr. Mikao Usui in Japan around 1922.  Reiki is a holistic technique which taps into the unlimited supply of life force energy and channels it through the hands of the trained practitioner.  It can reduce stress, facilitate an improved sense of well-being, and serve as a complement to conventional medical and veterinary care, as well as other holistic therapies.  It can do no harm and always goes to the source of the problem.  Reiki is not a religion, nor is it associated with any one belief system or doctrine. Skepticism will not prevent Reiki from working, but an open mind always helps.

About the Practitioner

Julie Keefe has been practicing Reiki I since October, 2000 and Reiki II since June, 2004.  In April 2007, she became a Reiki Master.  Julie has studied with Kathleen Prasad, co-author of the book, Animal ReikiUsing Energy to Heal the Animals in Your Life (ISBN:  1569755280), and is delighted and honored to offer Reiki healing to pets of all kinds, as well as the people who love them.  (Please see the Animal Reiki Practitioner Code of Ethics.)  Julie and her family share their home with two rescued greyhounds, Fred and Phoebe, as well as two rescued cats, Garrett and Tansy.  They actively support Greyhound Adoption of Greater Cincinnati and the League for Animal Welfare.

Reiki for Pets

Reiki is ideal for animals experiencing illness, behavioral problems, or close to making their transition.  But even healthy animals benefit from Reiki, too, because it naturally supports their well-being.  Pet treatments do not necessarily require hands-on contact.  Many animals are most comfortable when the practitioner sits a few feet away, directing the Reiki to them.  The pet receives the same benefits as a hands-on treatment, but has the freedom to stand, lie down, sleep, or move around.  Treatments are never forced upon the animal.  The practitioner always asks permission and can tell whether or not it has been granted.  If the animal is receptive, the practitioner may use similar hand positions as those applied to people.  She also takes cues from the pet as to when it has had enough Reiki, so the length of the treatment is determined by them.  Your pet may be more relaxed if his animal friends are in the vicinity.  A group treatment allows the whole animal family (or a few of them) to bask in the energy at the same time.  The Reiki always goes where it is needed.  One animal may require as few as 30 minutes, but it (or the group) may need as long as 60 minutes.  You may prefer to arrange separate treatments at the same visit for pets that appreciate their space from the others or would benefit from one-on-one attention.

Reiki for People

A Reiki treatment is a relaxing experience that treats the unity of mind-body-spirit.  A full treatment usually takes 45-60 minutes and requires no special equipment.  The recipient stays fully clothed and receives Reiki while comfortably seated in a chair or reclined on a massage table.  Reiki energy flows through the practitioner's hands as they are placed on or above positions that correlate to energy centers in the recipient's body.  Each treatment is unique and may be experienced by the recipient as warmth, pulsation, or nothing at all.  Many people peacefully drift off to sleep while the treatment is in progress.  This does not limit the benefits in any way.

Distance Treatments for Pets and People

Reiki distance (also known as "absentia") treatments are given by the Reiki practitioner to animals and individuals who are not in physical contact with her.  The practitioner simply sends a full Reiki treatment remotely, over distance and time, via visualization, intention and focus.  Energy knows no bounds, so these treatments offer the same benefits to the recipient as an in-person treatment.  Distance treatments may be a preferable alternative to in-person treatments when dealing with an animal that may be especially fearful, frail, or close to making its transition.  Reiki can even be sent to help bring healing from past traumas.  These treatments are scheduled with the practitioner in advance, but can usually be scheduled within 24 hours to provide support in emergency situations.
