What is Reiki?
The traditional Japanese System of Reiki (pronounced "ray kee") is a gentle, non-invasive holistic technique and meditative practice founded in the early 20th century by Mikao Usui.
Reiki is not a religion, nor is it associated with any one belief system or doctrine. The word Reiki (ray-kee) means universal life energy ... the energy that moves through and animates every living thing. The Reiki practitioner is trained to focus this energy to reduce stress, promote relaxation, bring balance and support healing. Reiki always goes to the source of the problem (even when unknown), works for the highest good and can do no harm. Reiki complements conventional medical/veterinary care and works compatibly with other holistic therapies, but should NOT be a substitute for medical/veterinary diagnosis and treatment. Reiki practitioners cannot guarantee healing, diagnose conditions, perform medical treatment, prescribe substances or interfere with the treatment of a licensed professional. (If you are concerned about symptoms, always consult a doctor or veterinarian.)
What is a Reiki Treatment?
A Reiki treatment is simply a matter of the practitioner placing their hands lightly upon, above, or directed toward the recipient. Human recipients are fully-clothed on a massage table or seated in a chair. Most animals prefer having Reiki directed toward them, with the practitioner seated a few feet away, but may also welcome hands-on treatment. The animal receives the same benefits as a human treatment, but has the freedom to move around and choose when the treatment is over. A typical treatment for humans and animals will last about 30 to 60 minutes. Reiki can be very relaxing, so the recipient may fall asleep. This does not impede the treatment in any way.
Why Learn Reiki for Animals?
Reiki is ideal for animals experiencing illness, stress, behavioral problems or recovering from trauma/injury or surgery. But even healthy animals can benefit from Reiki. The practitioner is trained to recognize specific signals which indicate an animal’s willingness to receive Reiki. It provides us with a way to help support our animal friends when vets have done all that they can do. Reiki can support their journey to and over the Rainbow Bridge and be a source of gentle comfort to all involved throughout this process.
